Origin of the Life List

The idea of The Life List was conceived in a hospital waiting room in 2000.  My wife Vickie was rushed into emergency surgery in the middle of the night and I was faced with the all too real possibility of life without her.  As I sat by myself for 4 hours in that hospital waiting room, the longest 4 hours of my life, my mind drifted to things we should have done, places we would have seen, and adventures we should have experienced.  That is when I came up with the Life List and made a commitment to myself that…..if…..when, she was fully healed from this surgery, we would prioritize adventure in our lives.

We never really purposely delayed going places, time just passed very quickly without really realizing it.  We put off to some ‘later’ date because we were busy accumulating stuff, two cars, a house in the suburbs and ‘keeping up with the Jones.’  During Vickie’s long healing process we started a written list of places to see, things to do, and goals to accomplish.  We made a commitment to each other to prioritize the experiences on the Life list.  We both knew too well, you never really know how much time you might have left.

The Life List

The Life list is a glass half full version of a bucket list.  The slight difference; a bucket list is a list of things to do before you die; the Life List is a list of things to do while we are still willing and able to enjoy.   The list is so important to us that we quit our careers for a one-year hiatus in 2016 to pursue some of the more physically demanding adventures while we were still able to handle the rigors, after all, we are both card-carrying members of AARP.

About Us

Vickie and I have been married since 1987. We have one daughter, Kayla, who was born in 1992.  We love to hike, explore new areas, and experience new things.  This purpose of our blog is to inspire others to prioritize adventure in their lives.  To dream big, write your dreams down, plan and pursue a unique Life List of your own.  We will share our Life List, pictures and stories of our travels along with some advice.  Today is a great day to start.
